Tsavo national park
Tsavo national park is the largest and oldest national park in Kenya. It is located in the Taru desert and is nearly 22,000km2 in size. It opened its gates in April 1948. The park is near Voi town. The road and railway line run through it thus the park is divided into East and West.
The park is home to most of the larger mammals, dust-red elephants, rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, hippos, crocodile, waterbucks, leser kudu, gerenuk and hirola. Over 500 bird species can be found at the park.
Tsavo West is a mountainous and wetter with lots of swamps, Lake Jipe and Mzima springs. The larger mammals can be found there and they include: wild dogs, buffalos, elephants, giraffe, zebra, crocodile, lion, mongoose, hyrax, Dik-dik, Nocturnal porcupine. The area has over 600 recorded bird species.
